Software defects are prevalent among programs and may cause significant threats to both the national economy and human lives. However, they are inevitable during software development, especially with the rapid increase of the complexity and scale of software systems. Besides, finding and debugging software defects will cause huge burden to developers. Therefore, studying and developing automatic techniques to assist developers in these procedures to ensure software quality is vitally important. Automatically discovering defects is a longstanding and challenging research topic over the last decades. How to improve its effectiveness and efficiency is the ground challenge to make it meet the requirement of practical usages. Recently, the research interests on automatic fault localization and program repair are also rapidly growing, which are promising to free developers from heavy debugging tasks. However, how to precisely locate the buggy code and produce meaningful patches is fundamentally challenging due to the complexity and heterogeneity nature of large-scale software systems.

The aim of this special issue on “Automatic Defect Discovering and Fixing” is to bring this emerging area and related topics to the attention of the communities of software and system engineering as well as to provide an opportunity for researchers to present their latest attempts and achievements on related topics. In this special issue, we both invite extended versions of selected papers from collaborating workshops, and solicit novel submissions related to defect discovering and fixing.

Topics

The list of topics includes but not limited to:

(1) Theories and technologies for automatically predicting defects.

(2) Theories and technologies for automatically detecting defects.

(3) Theories and technologies for fault localization.

(4) Theories and technologies for automatic program repair.

(5) Theories and technologies for building or analyzing defect related benchmarks.

Important Dates

Submission deadline: August 10th, 2022

First notification: September 25th, 2022

Revision submission: November 25th, 2022

Notification of acceptance: December 25th, 2022

Submission Guidelines

Authors should prepare their manuscript according to the Guide for Authors of the Software: Evolution and Process. The submission site is http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jsme. Please select “Automatic Defects Discovering and Fixing” in the submission system. All the papers will be peer-reviewed following the Software: Evolution and Process reviewing procedures. Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere. If the submission is an extended work of a previously published conference/workshop paper, you must submit a cover letter/document detailing (1) the "Summary of Differences" between the conference/workshop paper and extended version paper, (2) a clear list of "new and original" ideas/contributions in the extended version paper (identifying sections where they are proposed/presented), (3) confirmation of the percentage of new material (at least 30%), and (4) the previously published conference/workshop paper.
